Know what you keep on every hour

Type what you charge for one hour, for one person. If you know what that hour costs you, type that too, and TailGateBid shows what you keep of it. None of it has to be set before your first quote.

What you keep

An example with made-up numbers, not a going rate

Say you charge $75 for an hour and that hour costs you $45. The Rates page answers in two lines: "You keep $30 of every hour." "You charge $75, and $45 of that covers what the hour costs you." That is $40 of every $100. Nobody is asked for a percentage.

When a price is under its cost

It is called out as you type, with what each hour you sell would lose. You can still save it. It is your business and your price.

What the hour costs you is optional

It means wages, payroll taxes, insurance, the truck, fuel and tools, for one person for one hour. A rough figure is fine, and customers never see it.

Leave it blank and your rate is still offered on your quotes. You just do not see what you keep.

Not sure of the figure? Work out what an hour costs you with the free calculator.

Services you charge for by the unit

Describe a service in a few words, the way you would to a customer. TailGateBid looks it up and offers the ways that work is charged: by the acre, by the hour, by the yard. Pick the way you price it and type your price.

The unit always grows with the job, so a price by the unit stays right whether the job is small or large.

Not sure what to charge for a job? The job price calculator works it out from your own costs.

Or let your quotes set them

You do not have to fill any of this in first. First-time setup asks for no rates at all.

When a Bid Partner quote has used a typical price, the quote shows a box called "Make these prices yours". Type what you really charge, and it is your price on that quote and on every one after.

The price book

Beside your rates sits a price book: the services, materials, labor and fees you quote most, each with a price, a unit and, if you want it, what it costs you. Costs are never shown to customers.

Already keep a list? It can be brought in from a spreadsheet.

Where your rates are used

On a quote you build by hand, your rates and your price book are offered as lines: pick one, then say how many hours or how much. Bid Partner prices from the same rates.

They are your prices, wherever you quote. They are not a setting of one tool.

What it does not do

  • The Rates page gives no going rate. The one price it offers comes from your own numbers: the price at which a service would keep you the same share as an hour of your time.
  • It does not compare your rates with other businesses'.

In every plan

Rates and the price book are part of every plan. See the plans.
